TARGET Sales Management System - Application Notes

System Issues

For these functions, you will need to know the password associated with your SYSTEM username. If you don't know this, please contact HSI support to find out. In all cases, you will need to log on with the username SYSTEM (and your special password) before giving any of the commands shown below. Unless the instructions say otherwise, you should use the BYE command to log off when you are done.

Changing date/time

To correct the data or time on your system, log on as SYSTEM, then give the appropriate command as shown below.
SET DATE mm/dd/yy
SET TIME hh:mm
Note that time is given with a 24-hour clock, so 3PM is 15:00.

Booting problems

If your system is experiencing "lock-up" problems or refuses to boot up properly, we suggest running a disk fixup on it. To do this, follow these steps:
  • Reboot your system
  • When the message "escape to enter maintenance mode" comes up on the screen, hit the ESC key
  • When you get the logon prompt, log on as SYSTEM
  • Type the command DISK S (FIX)
  • Lots of messages and numbers will fly by
  • If the result is just a system prompt, reboot and use normally
  • If you see messages involving "overlap", call HSI right away

Making emergency diskettes

If you system is really in serious trouble, we may instruct you to boot from your emergency boot diskettes; if you don't have a set of these, you may make them (while your system is still healthy) as follows:
  • Log on as SYSTEM
  • Have two diskettes ready
  • Give command MAKEBOOT F
  • Put in first diskette
  • Select the Format choice from menu
  • Put in second diskette when prompted
  • Label diskettes as Emergency boot 1 & 2
  • Log off when you are done
If you wish to test the diskettes, here's how:
  • Make sure everybody is logged off
  • Put first diskette in drive
  • Reboot
  • Mount second diskette when prompted
  • At log on prompt, log on as SYSTEM
  • Give command DISK F
  • If you see description of your hard disk, you are all set
  • Remove diskette and reboot

Formatting tapes

Backup tapes must be formatted prior to first use. Once a tape has been formatted, it should not need it again. Here's how to format a new tape:
  • Log on as SYSTEM
  • Give command A TAPE TAPE1
  • Put tape in drive and WAIT until it stops moving
  • Give command TAPE TAPE (INIT name) where the "name" is replaced by a tape name up to 8 characters long
  • You may repeat the above two steps for additional tapes
  • Log off when you are done
